Free Speech, Antisemites, De-Platformed By LinkedIn & Scooby Snacks
Does Free Speech On Social Media Matter?
Thanks for reading. 🙏
Welcome to Different.
The experimental (now de-platformed on LI) newsletter for entrepreneurs, marketing leaders and category designers with a different mind.
🏴☠️
Free Speech No.
Antisemites Yes.
“We are seeing tremendous attacks on First Amendment freedoms across the country right now, at all levels of government. Censorship is proliferating, and it’s deeply troubling,”
-Joe Cohn, legislative & policy director at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression.
Does free-speech matter to you personally?
Does free-speech on social platforms matter to you?
Even asking these questions seems insane to me.
But, surprisingly many (in the US) do not value free-speech.
And, free speech is a not an American value shared by (most) American social media platforms.
My tangle with LI about antisemites appears to be over.
I lost.
The LI cops don’t like standing up to antisemites.
Over the last week LI threatened to de-platform me multiple times.
Then yesterday sent this👇
(Notice they can not be direct and say “you’ve been de-platformed”.
No.
They perpetuate the use of passive- aggressive mamby-pamby bullshit, “access to your account has been restricted”.)
(Tangent warning)
Every time I hear this kind of in-direct, nutless wonder talk I’m reminded of an old joke.
Sales rep to VP of Sales, “We have a problem.”
VP of Sales, “Don’t use the word problem. It’s too harsh. Say the kinder, “situation”.
VP of Sales later tells CRO, “We have a situation”.
CRO says to VP of Sales, “Don’t use the word situation. It’s confrontational. Use the calmer, “issue”.
CRO later explains to CEO, “We have an issue”.
CEO responds, “Don’t use the word issue. It is a micro aggression. Use the gentler, “opportunity”.
CEO walks into the next board meeting declaring, “we have a real opportunity hitting our revenue targets this quarter.”
Board fires CEO.
🏴☠️
Then yesterday LI took down my profile completely.
Checked this morning.
It was back up 🤔
So I clicked on “learn more” in the nasty gram.
Got a “Welcome Back” notice.
But I was (very) far from welcomed back 🤔
I’m out.
CNN reports:
LI (like most social platforms) has no speech policy.
And LI might be the most woke.
(Notice how they always asking you what race you are, what your pronouns are, if you are left handed or a vegetarian…
…I might have made up those last two… 😎)
The giant bummer about this is, LI is the platform where people (generally) can not hide behind fake names.
This tends to encourage more real dialogue.
But LI doesn’t (appear) to want conversation about much controversial.
It seems, antisemites can say what they like (as long as they drape it in the right subversive, passive-aggressive, west-coast approved mamby-pamby woke speak).
But respond directly.
(Swear at antisemite)
That is harassment.
(So sorry to harass the person who just insinuated that Israel deserved the mass slaughter of their people.)
If any of this seems off to you….
I ask you to post this newsletter (or your own personal message) on LI.
Declare that you support free-speech on the LI platform, stand against de-platforming and (most importantly) stand for the right to speak out against Jewish hate.
Now if you’re thinking,
“Hey man, this is not might fight. I subscribed to this newsletter because I want to read something fun and different about marketing, entrepreneuring, and category design.
I don’t care about Lochhead & LinkedIn.
Lochhead’s a hothead.
Maybe he deserves to get booted from LI.
Maybe LI is right, Lochhead should talk pretty to antisemites.
And, really he should shut up about Israel and get back to business.”
If that’s how you feel.
I understand.
And, I’m not your a guy.
You see, I believe what happens in the world matters.
I believe that business people are some of the most powerful and influential people.
And I believe that it is important for business people to drive authentic conversation about our world.
I also believe that censorship on LI is bad for business, bad for careers and very bad for free-speech.
The response to speech you don’t like is not censorship.
It is more speech.
Yesterday, I even explained to someone on LI who was calling for a ban of antisemitic posts, that I believe they should stay. Free speech, is free speech.
Let the world see their hate. The people doing the hating. And respond.
I’ve also had many respectful conversations over the last week with Muslims / Arabs. A recent LinkedIn DM with an Arab American ended with him saying:
"..Wishing you the best with all you do, and as a person who believes in God, I pray that where I may be wrong, may God correct me, and where you may be wrong, may God correct you"
Legendary!
The two of us were having a very respectful conversation. On LI.
(now that’s gone)
I’d ask you to consider, that one day, ….there may be a topic that you will want to stand up for.
When that day comes, you will (might) personally experience the decline in tolerance for free speech that Jacob Mchangama, Author of “Free Speech: A History from Socrates to Social Media” warns about.
So please. (Consider)
Posting this newsletter (or your own personal message) on LI, X, Facebook and anywhere else you like.
Today.
(If you can)
And declare that you support free-speech, stand against de-platforming and stand for the right to speak out against Jewish hate.
I’ll be back (here) with a poured fresh version of This Different Newsletter very soon.

Scooby Snacks….
This newsletter really ties the room together.

The creator of this (banned on LI) experimental newsletter:
-can’t find his dog
-does not possess a GED
-was thrown out of school at 18
-was likely hangin’ out with Mary Jane
-is considered radically incompetent (by many)
-possess multiple learning differences (aka superpowers)
Book reviewers on the internet have called his work:
“Very shallow”
“Incredibly mediocre”
“Easily one of the worst things I've had the displeasure of listening to.”
And one of the all-time greatest business book reviews:
“This book reads more like an MLM or cult brochure.”

Sharing this newsletter (broadly on social media) makes you’re richer.

The greatest Facebook Group in the world: “Left Lane Prius”.
This dispute with LI reminds me of John Mellencamp’s Authority song,
They like to get you in a compromising position
They like to get you there and smile in your face
They think, they're so cute when they got you in that condition
Well I think, it's a total disgrace
I fight authority, authority always wins
I fight authority, authority always wins
I been doing it, since I was a young kid
I've come out grinnin'
I fight authority, authority always wins
So I call up my preacher
I say: "Gimme strength for Round 5"
He said: "You don't need no strength, you need to grow up, son"
I said: "Growing up leads to growing old and then to dying,
And dying to me don't sound like all that much fun"
I fight authority, authority always wins
I fight authority, authority always wins
I been doing it, since I was a young kid
I've come out grinnin'
I fight authority, authority always wins

Category Design is a new lens on business. And once you have the lens, you see categories everywhere.
How’s this for a new category of bum care:
🏴☠️
This Scooby Snacks section weirdly goes back and forth from the 1st person to the 3rd person.
That’s against the teaching of any decent “How To Be A Writer 101” course.
Reading this might be a waste of time.
Podcasts are the only medium for authentic (unedited) dialogue.
Do people really buy books this guy writes?
No wonder he “has” to write in a writing band.
He can’t write, he’s dyslexic.
The person who came up with “dyslexic” had to hate dyslexic people.
Because dyslexic is fucking hard to spell.
Especially if you’re dyslexic.
🏴☠️
On LinkedIn Category Pirates (and therefore me) are listed in the “Alternative Medicine” category.
That means we get funny spam.
The stuff in this (experimental) newsletter that sounds nuts, ill-conceived &/or poorly written… I did that on my own.
(Probably after an IPA, a bourbon & a toke)
That said,
Most of the ideas, research, frameworks (and even big chunks of the writing) are as a direct result of (or completely lifted from) my partnership with Eddie Yoon & Katrina Kirsch (aka Category Pirates 🏴☠️ )
Subscribe to Category Pirates 🏴☠️, it will make you more piratey ☠️
If you're not enjoying this (experimental) newsletter, You’re (safely) in the majority.
Ever notice, much business content is like a Marriott lobby.

“That was a legendary Marriott lobby.”

Contrary to Internet rumors, LinkedIn is not the secret funder or publisher of this newsletter. We are in no way associated with LinkedIn.
Sharing this newsletter (broadly) on linkedin will elongate your life by as much as a decade.
There are (random) strategically placed spelling, grammar and formatting mistakes in this newsletter.
If you think Taylor Swift is breading french bulldogs (at scale) in order to harvest their DNA to sell to “The Globalists” as life extending juice, then consider these strategic mistakes part of a secret code that unlocks Federal Government servers in Bumsquat Youdaho to the files that prove the Statue of Limitations was brought here by Aliens.
If you’re not a Taylor Swift is breading frenchies person, the errors herein exist because Lochhead is lazy… and wants to write in an unfettered, real(ish) time way and an editor would slow the roll.

(Is this newsletter still going?)
(This getting even more unprofessional than normal?)
Wasn’t this supposed to be serious?
🏴☠️
There will be repetitive content from time to to…because the creator of this newsletter will absolutely forget he already posted it…
….this is a feature, not a bug.
Hey, thanks for hanging out for the extra (silly) scooby snacks at the end...
….let's hang out again soon
